The book I am currently reading introduced me to stoicism and I am fascinated by the philosophy it preaches to be honest.
the name "stoicism" was originally knows as "Zenonism" , because it was founded by Zeno of Citium.
But "Zenonism" was changed to stoicism because the stoics feared that personality of the founder will influence the philosophy of this cult and they believed that their leader wasn't that wise to lead.
The name "Stoicism" came from the "Stoa Poikile" or "painted porch", a colonnade decorated with beautifully painted mythological and historic battlefield scenes where Zeno and his followers used to meet and discuss philosophy.
CORE TENETS OF STOICISM:
There's what you can change in the world, and that you can't. you should care about the stuffs you can change because that just makes you sad and pointless. just focus on what you can change.
Stoicism is a philosophy of personal ethics informed by its system of logic and its views on the natural world.
the four virtues of stoicism are:
Courage.
Temperance.
Justice.
Wisdom.
they are the most essential values in Stoic philosophy. We have discovered a lot of things —automobiles, the Internet, cures for diseases that were previously a death sentence—but have we found anything better?
…than being brave
…than moderation and sobriety
…than doing what’s right
…than truth and understanding?
No, we have not. It’s unlikely we ever will.
Stillness is the key-Ryan Holiday
In Stillness Is the Key, Ryan draws on timeless Stoic and Buddhist philosophy to show why slowing down is the secret weapon for those charging ahead.
This is one of the most formulaic book I've read in a while.
If you're interested in "stillness" (calm, silence, minimalism, meditation) then this is definitely worth checking out as there's a lot of positive stuff to take away.
also, mini confession, I really didn't get time to complete this, last few pages are left :(
Franz Brentano, philosopher and psychologist, was an iconic teacher eclipsed by his students, Freud and Husserl among them.
there is a striking generalization that emerges, which he called the Law of Dynasties : in case after case, the movers and shakers of the fields had themselves been the students of an earlier mover and shaker.
Highly charismatic teachers who arouse great devotion among their students also seem to pass on to them their tacit permission to be creative scholars.
A beautiful time-lapse that shows Physarum polycephalum's complexity, emphasizing the slime moulds surprisingly sophisticated capacities for problem-solving.
What would you be doing 5 years from now, if you are allowed to do anything ?
